Farewell Sergei Gorbok!
Summer of 2020 marked an end to one more career which will surely be remembered for a long time – especially within SEHA – Gazprom League and fans of Vardar 1961. Of course, we’re talking about Russian back-shooter with a pure cannon for an arm Sergei Gorbok.
Belarusian-born Russian handball player started his career in Minsk spending five seasons with Arkatron before deciding to join Ukrainian Zaporozhye. Two years later he transferred to Slovenian Celje Pivovarna Lasko where he exploded next season (2006/07) scoring 60 goals in the EHF Champions League which attracted interest of German side Rhein Neckar Löwen. Gorbok spent three seasons in Bundesliga before agreeing on a contract with Russian giants Chekhovskie Medvedi. After three seasons in Chekhov and one more in Mannheim Sergei signed with Vardar opening a SEHA – Gazprom League chapter in his career.
It didn’t take long for him to become a fan favorite with the ‘Red&Black’ helping Vardar win the silver medal on SEHA Final 4 tournament back in 2016 after a narrow two-goal loss against Veszprem in Varazdin. Macedonians were in that same season on a verge of reaching their first EHF Champions League final tournament but fell short, once again versus Veszprem in CL quarter-finals. After that season Gorbok signed a two-year deal with Hungarian PICK Szeged only to return to Skopje during 2018/19 season helping ‘Red&Black’ climb the podium on SEHA Final 4 tournament in Brest as well as the European throne in Cologne about a month later.
Gorbok finished his career with 99 SEHA – Gazprom League goals and a lot of high-quality defensive performances which is also something he was well-known for. In the end we can’t do anything else but thank him for all that he’s done and wish him all the best in the future.
