EHFCL Round 2 preview: Veszprem welcoming Zagreb in SEHA derby of the CL, Meshkov in Portugal, Motor in Denmark
Second round of EHF Champions League group phase starts today and SEHA – Gazprom League representative teams will once again look prove what they’ll capable of on the biggest scene of them all. Our league will in this round have four of its teams out there on Champions League courts due to the fact that the match between Norwegian Elverum and Vardar 1961 had been postponed. Match between reigning European champions and Elverum had been postponed due to Elverum's transport issues caused by the current situation.
Despite of that – Telekom Veszprem, PPD Zagreb, Meshkov Brest and Motor Zaporozhye will all compete in this round so let’s take a look at what is waiting for us on Wednesday and Thursday!
(Group A) Porto – Meshkov Brest
After a successful start into this season’s Champions League campaign and a win over Macedonian Vardar, Meshkov Brest will on Wednesday look to make it two-from-two in Portugal against Porto. Portuguese representatives in the competition were in the premier round defeated at home against Elverum and it is clear they’ll do their best to come out victorious against Belarusian side. SEHA bronze medalists from Zadar are however full of confidence believing they can go far in the competition this season and it will be interesting to see whether coach Raul Alonso and his guys will be able to keep on delivering quality outings.
(Group B) Aalborg – Motor Zaporozhye
After a solid performance they’ve delivered in the first round at home against Barcelona, Motor Zaporozhye will in the second round travel to Denmark to meet Aalborg. Danish team was in the opening round of the competition better than Celje Pivovarna Lasko in Slovenia proving to be quite a serious contender to get out of group B and reach knock-out phase. Motor are on the other hand known to be a tough team to play against, both at home and away, and they’ll clearly look to crown a pretty good performance against Barcelona from the last round with first two points in a tough road game against Aalborg.
(Group B) Telekom Veszprem – PPD Zagreb
Hungarians and Croats have had quite different starts to the Champions League seasons. And while Telekom Veszprem managed to grab a four-goal win on the road in France against Nantes, ‘Lions’ were at home defeated against German THW Kiel. Despite of everything, matches between these two sides are always interesting and highly anticipated. After the match against Kiel, PPD Zagreb’ coach Igor Vori stated that they have a young team and that they have to do it match by match as well as that they will be going to Veszprem hoping to achieve a positive result. Two teams share a lot of handball history together and another chapter will be written in Veszprem Arena on Thursday evening so make sure not to miss it.
