7m - Milan Bomastar: "SEHA is a big challenge for all of us"
Although Serbian national team has not managed to achieve a significant result on the big stage ever since the EHF EURO held in Serbia back in 2012, an aspect which never ceases to amaze with the 'Eagles' are their goalkeepers. Most recents products of the quality work that is being put in in Serbia are Dejan Milosavljev (EHF CL and SEHA - Gazprom League winner with Vardar Skopje in 2019), Vladimir Cupara (SEHA - Gazprom League winner from 2020) and young 22-year old Milan Bomastar who is showcasing his talents standing between posts for Metaloplastika Sabac.
Two-time EHF Champions League winners (1985, 1986) from the city on the river Sava are still in race for the second spot in Serbian League which leads to SEHA - Gazprom League next season. Securing a spot for the next season was the top priority for coach Veselin Vukovic and his guys who will play their last group stage match of the SEHA season on May 25, when travelling to Croatia to meet PPD Zagreb.
How do you rate the season so far?
It was from the very beginning of the season obvious Vojvodina has the best team in Serbia. They've already secured the title and I feel like it is well-deserved. We've had our chances in the Cup Final but failed to use them and stun the team from Novi Sad. Our focus is now on the final two games of the Playoffs where our goal is to pass Partizan Belgrade in the standings and finish second.
Metaloplastika has managed to deliver five solid SEHA - Gazprom League outings so far this season playing in a tough group along with PPD Zagreb, Eurofarm Pelister and Tatran Presov with that 29:31 win in Presov being one of the highlights of the season.
We did play some good matches and, in my opinion, our inexperience decided some of the matches against us eventually. We’re simply lacking experience which would help us endanger teams that are better than us. In spite of all that, I feel like we can be satisfied with our SEHA season – especially looking around at everything that is happening. Every SEHA match helps you progress and we’ll have more of them coming our way this season with clashes against Vardar 1961 lying ahead.
How do you rate your SEHA experience in general? With 8.2 saves per game you’re currently the best goalkeeper in the league.
Very important in helping younger players develop faster and in the right way. Of course it is a huge motivation to show what you’re capable of when you see teams like Vardar or Veszprem on the other side of the court. Unique experience for youngsters, that’s for sure. This is my sixth season in Sabac, second in SEHA - Gazprom League in general and I feel like it has really helped me progress as a goalkeeper.
Handball tradition of the city of Sabac means something in every match.
Metaloplastika is a big club with golden history and you’re aware of that whenever you’re out there. It pushes you to give everything you’ve got every time no matter who stands on the other side of the court. This jersey really feels special. It is challenging, demanding but also a good way to test your limits – both individually and as a group.
You are a part of the ‘new wave’ of Serbian goalies along with Tibor Ivanisevic, Vladimir Cupara, Dejan Milosavljev and Todor Jandric. What did it feel like to wear the national team jersey during the EHF Week against Greece?
There are many great goalkeepers in Serbia and it is really extremely hard to secure a national team call. We’re all aiming for that. Cupara and Milosavljev have more experience but Todor and I are looking to grow from season to season. One thing is for sure – Serbia won’t have a problem with goalies in the upcoming years.
Your last SEHA group stage match of the season will be in Zagreb on May 25.
Our focus in currently on our national Championship where our goal is to finish second and secure SEHA spot for next season. Despite that, we surely won’t go to Zagreb with a ‘white flag’ – our younger players will likely get a bigger chance in that one and I’m sure they’ll all do their best to shine.
