Niko Medved leaves Gorenje Velenje after 11 years
The Slovenian club announced that the captain Niko Medved will leave Gorenje Velenje. He left winger has played a total of 324 matches for the club!
Gorenje Velenje will look very different next season. Apart from agreeing a deal with Zoran Jovicic to take up the head coach role, the club announced that many players will also leave the club. The latest departing player is Niko Medved, who joins the likes of Potocnik, Toskic, Cehte and Ferlin who have found new clubs. Medved has been in the club since he was 17, and was somewhat of a synonym of Gorenje Velenje over the years. The 28-year old has enjoyed a lot of success with Gorenje Velenje, and even got a chance to represent the Slovenian national team.
Medved scored 964 goals for Gorenje Velenje, in 324 total appearances. He captained the club in two SEHA – Gazprom League seasons in which the Slovenian team proved to be a terrific competitor. Medved is Gorenje's second all-time leading scorer in the SEHA – Gazprom League. He scored 105 goals in 33 appearances in the past two seasons.
Gorenje Velenje will also be without Cehte, Toskic, Ferlin, Potocnik, Zaponsek, Klec, Golcar and Pejovic next season. Medved's replacement will likely be the youngster Tadej Mazej. Niko Medved will definitely be missed in Velenje, and his long term loyalty propelled him into an exceptional role model among the fans!
