Vojvodina has, in the last decade, managed to become the synonym for handball in Serbia. For many years it seemed like Metaloplastika Sabac and its eight-year-long title-winning dominance from the 80s will never be achieved again. However, in what is without doubt a completely different environment, team from ‘Slana bara’ managed to set a new record in terms of dominance within the borders of Serbia.

In the season of 2020/2021, young coach Boris Rojevic and his team celebrated eighth national championship title in a row. The story of their dominance gets even better when you see that they’ve managed to win all 14 league matches with a goal difference of +118. Partizan Belgrade finished second with eight points less.

Environment of stability the entire club and its system have, which was established by Director Darko Jevtic and President Milan Djukic all the way back in the beginning of the last decade turned out to be the perfect base for winning almost all the possible national trophies. Their 41-year-old coach Boris Rojevic, who has been a part of the team through many levels – as a player, junior team coach and now senior team head coach, obviously knows what it takes to succeed as he managed to win all nine trophies in his three seasons with the team.

Rise in quality became clearly visible in the last few seasons with favored teams like Meshkov Brest, Motor Zaporozhye, Tatran Presov, Vardar Skopje and Nexe all losing points in Novi Sad. Roster is even more competitive this season. It’s a great mix of experience and potential with players like Svetislav Verkic, Nemanja Pribak and young prodigy Jovica Nikolic who will be joing German Wetzlar at the end of the season. Nikolic is not the only ‘premium product’ of Vojvodina’s handball school – Milan Jovanovic was also doing great ending up in French Toulouse in 2018. However, injuries slowed Jovanovic down lately not allowing him to reach his full potential.

Vojvodina is however doing a really good job of balancing between trophies and promoting young players. It’s not an easy process but they have been doing it well for the past decade. In the new season, their younger players will have a chance to develop playing against Motor Zaporozhye, Vardar 1961 and Nexe. What is sure is that Vojvodina will not come out with a ‘white flag’ against anyone.
