Telekom Veszprem going for the fifth SEHA - Gazprom League trophy
Telekom Veszprem. A team which already has four titles and one silver medal will this season try to defend the title won at SEHA – Gazprom League Final 4 in Zadar last September.
That was the first major trophy in the coaching career of Momir Ilic. Serbian coach had an incredible playing career winning two EHF CL titles with THW Kiel and two SEHA titles with Veszprem. It was far from easy to prepare the team for that grand final against Zagreb but Ilic pulled it off securing his first big coaching title in ‘Kresimir Cosic’ sports hall.
Hungarians won their first title at home back in 2015 convincingly outplaying Meshkov Brest 32:21. A year later they had a much harder job against Vardar Skopje in Varazdin eventually managing to reach a hard-fought 28:26 win. Same rivals met in the big final in Zadar back in September of 2020 with Veszprem once again securing the win (35:27). That was however only the revenge for what happened in Brest, Belarus in 2017 when Vardar celebrated 26:21.
Hungarians will once again join the competition in the quarter-finals. Until then, they will be fully focused on their national championship as well as EHF Champions League where they are doing a solid job so far this season. They finished the year on third place of Group B right behind Kielce and PSG but ahead of Barcelona and Flensburg.
Ilic decided to start the first season of his three-year plan with a rejuvenated roster. Their team is however still covered really good on every position and the fact that four of their players have managed to make 2022 EURO semi-finals being some of the key players of their respective national team says quite enough. Rodrigo Coralles, Jorge Maqueda, Rasmus Lauge Schmidt and Kentin Mahe however have quite a lot of support in Veszprem’s jersey from players like Manuel Strlek, Petar Nenadic, Yahia Omar and Andreas Nilsson. With such a roster, one and only goal every time they are out there is to win the match – no matter who is on the opposite side of the court.
