Derby clashes for Croatia, Hungary, North Macedonia and Serbia in 2024 EURO Qualifiers

2024 EURO Qualifiers: Croatia

It’s the beginning of March, which means it is time for another national team week. This time, it is reserved for the third and the fourth round of the Qualifiers for the upcoming 2024 Men’s EHF EURO that will take place in Germany, and as always our eyes will be focused on our SEHA - Gazprom League participating countries.

In Group 1, two rounds into the Qualifiers, North Macedonia is second with just as many points as first-positioned Portugal which has a bit better goal difference. Luxembourg and Türkiye have zero points at the moment. In the week that is ahead of us, North Macedonia will play two matches against Portugal that will basically decide who finishes on top of Group A. The first leg is scheduled for 9 March in North Macedonia, and the second only three days later in Portugal.

As a reminder, the top two teams from each group will advance directly to the 2024 EURO group stage, as well as the four of the best third-placed teams.

The situation is pretty much the same in Group 2, with currently second-placed Serbia awaiting the two encounters against Norway. Norwegians are currently leading the group with four points, while Serbia has just as much with a bit weaker goal difference after the opening two rounds. The first game is scheduled for 9 March in Serbia, and the second for 12 March in Norway.

In Group 2, we have two of our SEHA - Gazprom League representative countries with Slovakia aiming for the first points in these Qualifiers in two matches against Finland. The first one is scheduled for 9 March on Europe’s north, and the second only three days later in Slovakia.

In Group 5, at the moment top-positioned Croatia will play two matches against the Netherlands. With a new head coach Goran Perkovac in charge, Croatia will travel to Eindhoven to play the Netherlands away from home on 9 March and then they will meet them again only three days later in Croatia. Croatia is currently leading Group 5 with four points, Greece and the Netherlands have two each while Belgium has zero.

Group 6 is bringing us another duel on top with Hungary facing off against Switzerland. The first leg will be played on 9 March in Switzerland, and the second on 12 March in Hungary. Hungary is currently on top of the group with four points and a better goal difference than second-placed Switzerland which also has four points. Lithuania and Georgia are yet to win a point in this group.

In other groups, we can highlight the derby matches between Iceland and the Czech Republic in Group 3, Austria and Romania in Group 4, Montenegro and Slovenia in Group 7, and France versus Poland in Group 8.

As a reminder, the next SEHA - Gazprom League match is also scheduled for 9 March with Croatian runners-up Nexe looking to take revenge against Vojvodina at home.
